Management Week 15-16

MANAGEMENT MARATHON 2015 – A WEEK OF FUN AND LEARNING

Academics are a quintessential part of every individual's life. It is important to obtain good grades during one's college years. Along with that, it is necessary for every student to develop soft skills, which would eventually facilitate the harnessing of many opportunities for personal and professional success in life. One's ability to coordinate and cooperate with fellow members in a group, accept challenges with spontaneity, solve problems with considerable ease and other abilities, would greatly help one in the advancement of one’s career.

We, in the Department of Office Management, strongly believe that the real essence of imparting education lies in enabling students to explore not just the realm of academics but also the equally monumental field of soft skill development. The goal of the department is to prepare good managers in whatever area they choose. In order to fulfill this goal, we formulated a plan to celebrate the various nuances that the field of Management comprises, whilst educating and simultaneously entertaining the target population: our students. We decided to conduct a series of activities, collectively named 'The Management Event Marathon', was held over a fortnight for the educational yet recreational benefit of our students. Here’s a gist of the events held in 2015 - 16 and the energy buzz that rented the air:

MANAGEMENT QUIZ: The first activity ‘The Management Quiz’ was conducted for all our Office Management students, across the three years. Participants, who were categorized into MIXED groups of equal numbers of older and younger students, were asked various questions spanning across the subject of Management and General Knowledge, including Current Affairs. The questions were generated by us the Event Managers – Aamani, Ramya and Patricia and the Quiz Master was Ms. D. A. Ramani, Head of the Department of Office Management.  This event went off marvelously well as each team of participants attempted to answer the questions with infectious enthusiasm and gave the other team a worthy fight for the winning spot.

A SENSE OF AN ENDING (Story completion contest): The second activity was received with equally great gusto. This activity named A Sense of an Ending was conducted for all of our B.A students. In this activity, teams of participants (3 or 4) were given half of a short story to which the ending was to be provided by them. Creativity was at its prodigious best as the teams presented exceptionally intriguing climaxes to their respective halves of the stories we had provided. This led to the event's gracious judges, Mrs. Sumona Banerjee from the Department of English and Ms. Prashanti Ayyagari from the Department of Psychology, getting uncomfortably stuck in a dilemma as to who the winning team should be. They however applauded all the teams for their amazing imagination and awarded prizes to the outstanding teams.

POT POURRI: The third event, namely Pot Pourri was received with tremendous excitement, much to our delight. This event was open for students as well as teachers across all departments to participate in. Participants were required to solve a cross word puzzle and complete a spot-the-differences puzzle in as short a period of time as possible, within the given time of 30 minutes. An exhilarating thrill prevailed amongst the participants as they raced to solve the two given questions. The teachers were seen racking their brains to finish the game on the dot. This event was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who took part in it. They also said ‘Great time and amusing too and wish we have more of these in future’.

MARKET YOUR PRODUCT: The fourth activity Market Your Product, was a learning experience for the student participants. Participants were asked to design and make their very own hand-crafted products days ahead of this event and on the day, were asked to persuade interested students and teachers on campus to buy their products, as quickly as possible. The cost of each participating team's product was decided by us, according to the amount of visible effort that had gone into its manufacture and its external appearance. The team that managed to sell its product and race back to us first was declared the winner.

The Management Event Marathon was received magnificently well and turned out to be a roaring success. It had, to a remarkable extent, satisfied the intent with which it was designed: To entertain and, at the same time, equip students with various soft skills.

FORMAL DRESS COMPETITION: We realized that in a multicultural environment, our students need to adapt to global patterns of dress as many organizations have a western outfit as their formal dress. So we had the Formal Dress Competition for the students of Office Management and we had 23 participants from the three years. The attire ranged from the very traditional Indian sari and salwar kameez to the suave trousers, shirt and coat.

The participants walked down the ramp and introduced themselves and their attire as to what it symbolized. The judges, Dr. PK Jayalakshmi, Head of the Department of Hindi, Ms. Sahitya Vasudevan, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Ms. Evangeline Joseph from the Final Year BA EPJ were impressed by some of the participants who introduced themselves and the formal wear they represented.

The event was hosted by Ms. Priya Kella with background music scored by Joanna Angel Samuel and Ranjana Fernando from the Final Years. The audience was ecstatic and cheered the participants with loud applauses when the smartly turned out contestants walked down the dias. Everyone agreed it was a great contest and the students from the other departments wished it was for the whole college. After all not for nothing is the Office Management Department unique in its brand identity.

The year 2015-16 was an eventful year with academically stimulating activities, extended co-curricular events and extra murals. Once again, the Office Management department proved that it’s not the course that matters but the way you perform in the course and the learning effervescence that matter and the students had loads of that.
